With the focus being mainly on the children – as the original Naruto was – it’s essentially a new story with some ties to the history of the series.
However, Naruto, Sasuke, Hinata, Sakura, Shikamaru, Sai, Konohamaru, and Shino, as well as the events that led to the decisive battle with Kaguya Otsutsuki, do play a major role particularly early in the series.
